The media is busy cashing in on the panic driven by the Swine Flu, so much so that the masks have become fashion accessories. The entire focus has been distorted just by picking at the government for their lack of measures or counting the number of deaths due to the pandemic. The other two strains of Flu viz; Dengue and Chickungunya are also prevalent and can be life threatening if neglected.

Dengue: Recent cases of dengue have shown that the virus starts to destroy blood platelets. For a normal person the blood platelet count is in a few lakhs. In the infected person, this count is observed to fall to an alarming low level. Result the person is losing conscious progressively. The counter measure is to infuse blood platelets from donors. Sounds easy but again not all donors are qualified. The donor platelet count should be above two lakhs. Once the donor platelets are extracted, there is a four hour window within which the platelet transfer has to take place. Depending on the patient, the body should start regenerating platelets after two or three infusions. If this process is successful, body responds to medication and the infection starts to subside.

Chickungunya: In this case, one starts with very high temperature and shivering and inflammation of the body. Though the infection is contained by medication, the inflammation lasts for anything between three to six months depending on the amount of rest taken. If the patient has a history of joint pains then, they find it to be aggravated during this phase.

Precautions: In case you detect signs of flu do not self-medicate. Visit your doctor and take prescribed medication and also do all tests if suggested, to be self assured.

The world is running fast and time devoted to self has reduced. In today’s fast paced world there’s little time to get into recreational activities. Gone are the days when regular exercises and grandma’s advises were considered over doctors’ treatment. Office timings have changed from 9am-5 pm to 9pm-5am. Twenty-four-hours seem just too less.
With today’s hectic lifestyle come depression, stress and what have you. And some people, mainly youngsters are resorting to different means of relieving stress by taking solace in drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
But then, there are some people who believe in curing and helping others through the ‘magic’ of Yoga.
Swami Ramdev has taken the world by storm by giving live examples of what Yoga can do to cure diseases. And Manas Maral, a senior executive at a software firm in Bangalore and disciple of the renowned yogic, has pledged to preach the benefits of the ancient Indian art by holding Yoga camps for better health care and cure.
34-year-old Manas believes in Yoga and Acupressure to fight all ailments and stay fit. “Yoga and Acupressure are known to cure people of the worst diseases and problems,” he says.
So how did he begin with Yoga? “It was my wife’s prolonged illness that made me realise the benefits of Yoga. I learned it and later taught her Pranayam. To my surprise she was fit in a week’s time.” Since then there was no looking back for Manas.
He started his yogic journey in February 2004, teaching a small group of people at his house in Koramangala, Bangalore. His first big Yoga teaching session was in August 2004 in his office Tavant Technology with 55 people.
Taking out time from his busy professional schedule, Manas has conducted about 110 Yoga camps in and around Bangalore, training more than 7000 people and curing nearly 500 patients suffering from thyroid, diabetes, blood pressure, tuberculosis, arthritis and kidney problems.
However, the journey of this software engineer has not been easy. The Yoga programs of Swami Ramdev were not so popular in Bangalore due to the language barrier. Manas, who hails from north India, solved the language problem by learning Kannada.
He started with a small Yoga camp and interacted regularly with other Yoga trainers and attended the shivirs of Swami Ramdev to keep himself updated with the latest treatments. Today, people swear by his Yoga remedies. Biggest supporter in his undulating endeavor is his wife Shalini, a homemaker, who also helps him in his yogic mission.
He has recently started a small care centre in Bangalore where he admits patients needing immediate treatment.
Manas has always dreamt of building a healthy nation by including Yoga in all schools. His dream came true when one of the schools in Bangalore inducted Yoga in its timetable where even parents can join the students. Since then, the school has reported a remarkable fall in sick leave by students.
Manas works for 18 hours a day and still remains fresh, ‘the credit goes to Yoga’, he says. Many institutions and corporate houses like ISRO, Tavant Technologies, Lucent, HP, Mu-Sigma call him for lectures on Yoga. He also conducts regular classes for the Police Training Department.
Manas has plans of opening a bigger care centre to treat the patients of cancer, diabetes, thyroid etc. “All the rich people have the advantage of using money to their advantage. I want to treat people free of cost, especially the weaker section who cannot afford to buy medicines,” he concludes.

I have been researching on recurring deposits for the past two days. I feel strongly for it, one because it is a very safe and sober investment because you can either do it in banks or in post offices. The differentiator is, banks give you the flexibility for period of investment ( starting from 6 months to a max of 120 months depending on which bank) and they give you the benefit of floating interest (if bank interest rates increase you are given the benefit of it) whereas in post offices you get a flat interest rate 7.5% and you will have to invest for a min period of 5 years. Another advantage of this scheme is you can start with minimum sum of Rs. 500 with banks and as low as Rs 10 with post offices as these are aimed at low income group class.

I am aware there are several other schemes which can fetch you higher interest and returns but one point I have noticed is they are all long term investments. Also they lock up your cash for the tenure of the scheme. You can also argue that share market can give you instant big ticket returns but again that also is a gamble and you need to invest not only money but also your time to follow the market and make the kill at the right time. I have spoken to many of my friends in the past who are in finance, though most of them tried selling me some SIP (Sytematic Investment plan) or the other, one good friend actually initiated me into thinking on these lines. All he said was if you are thinking of making a corpus for yourself and retire in style, then invest in FDs. Be disciplined and judicious while investing and try as hard not to break the chain come what may. He proposed one should make atleast a Rs. 10,000 FD every month. Yes for a start, even I was taken aback, but I then started my research on something small which later as I progress can lead me into a position where I can save at the proposed rate.

Now, you save say Rs. 1000 a month for a period of 12 months, you will get a return of Rs. 13,200 @ 10% interest. Say you put Rs. 10,000 in an FD and balance Rs. 3,000 you use it to pay monthly installments for the next three months of your new RD.Keep the term of the fixed deposit short say 12 months and also keep the amount small say Rs. 10,000. Its a rare case that one will require money in really large amounts on emergency. This money will come into play only beyond our regular safeguards. You can always break a FD early, only thing is that you lose on your interest. If the bank says you will get 10% interest at the end of 12 months, actually they would have divided the interest over the 12 month period. So if break the FD within 3 months you will end up with no interest, from 3-6 months u might get 4% and so on. This actually I got to know when HDFC was selling a similar scheme.

I have mentioned "regular safegaurds" in the previous paragraph, now what are those -

1. Your employer provides you with medical coverage for your direct dependants

a. medical insurance with cashless card facility

b. medical reimbursement upto Rs. 15,000 p.a.

2. Your investments for individual or group Life (health) insurance for your family that you might have taken to avail tax exemptions under Sec.80.C

This post is aimed at basically saving some money for any future uncertainities be it health, children's education, retirement etc. I have mentioned events that are long term. So when you start to save, don't plan how to spend this kitty. Remember the hero honda tag line few years back "Fill it, Shut it, Forget it", is apt for wrapping this post. Adios

Yo guys, me back with another movie review. This time it is Bruce Willis and his geek friend with Die Hard 4.0. This is the second sequel movie wherein the makers have kept up with time for the plot. Bruce Willis is the same usual in the face, honest cop doing his duty but his nemesis this time around is far more unusual. The bad guy is fully loaded and tech savvy something our hero is wary about. Yet another fast paced, tip of the seat, action thriller and the sequences have been picturized pretty well. What to look out for......fast paced action, lots of hero - villain mind games, lots of techy stuff, pain in the ass cop Bruce Willis...wow....go watch it.

Ho Ho Ho...I am back after a long hiatus...This weekend was good for the fact I caught up on two movies one on saturday and the other on Sunday...Let me talk to you on John Rambo in this post. I really appreciate Stallone for having done this movie after twenty long years from the release of the last sequel to Rambo ...and I really felt that nobody could have done justice to the role....the movie is super short and super fast ( one hour forty minutes or so)..guess what, they had this trivia about the movie going on during breaks which gave an interesting fact...the trivia was - How many kills per minute happen during the climax? Ans. 2.9kills per minute...They have tried to match the action capabilities of twenty years younger Rambo but they have thought through these sequences well enough not to potray stallone younger than his age...Trade mark agility with his bow and arrow, tracing a fake trail for the sniffer dogs man it was cool...This time he forges a new dagger, different from his trade mark dagger which holds a compass and a survival kit in its handle. Life...Holy Matrimony...Marriages

Ha...the past year has been a season of holy matrimony [including mine :) ].....the frequency is like one marriage every quarter...huf huf.....Good side of this is you are exposed to various styles of marriage, new places, mind blowing cuisines and not the least fun, fun, and fun all the way....flip side is your pockets get light and its recession time :(.... Its been like 5 manglorean marriages, one kodava marriage [ my buddy writes: http://thejeshgn.com/2009/02/04/kodava-marriage-respecting-maternal-family/ ]and one pure tamil brahmin marriage.... ofcourse marriages in the family is fun but I actually liked being part of the other two marriages....two extreme cultures...one is happy go lucky, staple food is meat, drinks and dance and the other is very conservative, lot of rituals (man two straight days of marriage rituals !!!!) and pure vegetarian....the common thread between these is the hospitality extended...wow amazing....not to forget the place - one lush green stretches of coffee estates and the other dotted with temples at every street bend....quite an exhilarating experience.....do not mistake me for being modest by being subtle about manglorean marriages....the thing is it is a short and sweet affair for us...the entire thing lasts a max of 4 hours....most of the fun is at home with all the games, dance and ofcourse mangy food...yummm...two more marriages to go for this year....may be I will write another post after I get back....adios

Hi there....Hmmm...Been away for long....one hectic week of travel to attend two of my close friends marriages.....one bout of sickness and Iam back on track......another book of Chetan Bhagat.....This book is more on a serious note but yet fun to read...amazing the way a blend has been created of the three Indian fanaticism - Cricket, Enterpreneurship & Hindutva(read politics)....gripping storyline from start to finish....even the turning points in the story are so very well embedded into the flow of the story that it gives you the feeling of real time action happening in front of your eyes as you read......one more good book from Chetan....captures the life of three buddies through thick and thin of their business, their challenges and triumphs...you may feel the narration going haywire mostly towards the end but still I will give a thumbs up for the book.....adios folks

Hmmmm....as promised I am back after finishing my second book by Chetan Bhagat.... Yes I know what you guys are thinking.... pretty fast eh!... I like his style of writing... well another narration by Chetan about being an IITian.... but I would like to say here that every student undergoing a professional course passes through a similar phase as described here..... Three guys Alok, Ryan & Hari get into the prestegious IIT to etch out a future for themselves...but are aghast (atleast Ryan feels) when they realize their life will be a routine for the next 4 years minus the simple joys of life....some creative ways to beat the system....and they end up just short of being deprived their degrees.....the description is so real to life.... I appreciate the authors ability to connect all emotions (friendship, love, parents, joy...) in a single thread as he builds on the story.... well yet another good read....hope to feel the same at the end of the third book "The three mistakes of my life"......adios

Hi again... I am excited about writing this post.... second book in a row which has actually brought back my interest to read books....I mean the demeanor of the book is so simple but yet energetic....I read it like a marathon....when I actually finished it was 4am..I guess that is when the shift at a call centre ends :) ...the storyline is very continuous and racy....like you don't feel like dropping the book before you actually read the last page.... "Change we can" (Hail Obama for coining this) applying to the writing scene in India..... language easily understood, plot is local or desi, good mix of emotions..... all in all a superb read......The plot revolves around these call centre agents Shyam, Vroom, Priyanka, Esha, Radhika & Military Uncle, their upheavals in life brought to the fore using humor and ofcourse not to forget the typical highly educated but dumb boss Mr. Bakshi (atleast I could relate to the incidents described) ..... "HELLO" the Salman starrer recently released is actually inspired by this book....guess what, I bought the Chetan Bhagat triplet in a good deal I thought...my next read is Five Point Something... adios

Ha spring.....the season of holy matrimony. My friends have decide to take the plunge this year (atlast), so what better way to celebrate than have a Bachelor's/Bachelorette's party. So ten of us, swooped down on this place "WOODRICH ENCLAVE" on doddaballapur road. Well nothing much to talk on the drive as it is well laid tarmac all the way(road to international airport what else do you expect) till you reach the glowsign with the picture on the left. The last 2kms is kuccha road from the main road, wherein you need to take a right after a little over the first 1km to reach the huge entry gate of this resort.

To talk about the place, you are surrounded by greenery all around but well layed out. Cottages are pretty decent with attached toilets and bath. The cottages can house six people comfortably with individual single cots. The entire setup with breakfast, lunch & dinner will cost you INR 1000 per head. So carry your booze and you are all set for a long night of drink, dine and dance(we were up until 4am in the morn). There is no end to anything until you stear clear from other fellow occupants. Play music within your reserved premises and have a ball.

Food is pretty decent, no complaints but you will have adhere to specific time (its not a restraunt, its a buffet). Other amenities listed are swimming pool, jacuzzi, indoor badminton, etc (you will find the list as you enter). If you are really game, take a early morning drive to Nandihills(just 24kms) to catch the Sun early on the rise.

Books...White Tiger...Arvind Adiga

Hmmm...finally I finished reading the 2008 booker prize winner book "White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga. I had borrowed it from my dear friend shankar like two months back. We were supposed to have a review session post my reading. But things went into a tizzy with the recession and I just could not get back into finishing the book. Coming to talk about the book, the author has really kept the flow simple and intriguing. The characterization is also perfect. He has like pictured the life of the central character from being a toddler to finally a successful enterpreneur in simple and logical flow of events. The beauty of the book is actually this. To cut the long story short, the book actually gives you the picture of a common man who is smart, who braves poverty and dares to dream to be out of drudgery. All in all a very fine effort by the author and worth the recognition.
